  • Notes
    • From FindaGrave:

Jonathan was 1 of 8 children born to Nathaniel I. Oakes & his 2nd wife, Mary (Holoway).

Jonathan was a carpenter, horsesmith & farmer.

Jonathan married his 1st wife Rebecca (Barnard) in about 1740 in Marlborough, MA. She was probably born in July, 1727, but possibly September 10, 1725, at Andover, MA. She died before 1748 in MA. Her mother, Rebecca (Osgood) Barnard, died in childbirth.

      Their 2 children:
      Mary, Lydia Oakes

Married his 2nd wife, Elizabeth (Wheeler), on January 19, 1749, in Stowe, MA. She died same day she gave birth to their baby daughter, Elizabeth.

      Their 2 children:
      1) baby boy, b. & d. 11/11/1749 Harvard, MA
      2) Elizabeth, b. 11/23/1750 Harvard, MA

Married 3rd wife, Sarah (Wheeler) in about 1751 in Stow, MA. She was the younger sister of his 2nd wife, Elizabeth.

      Their 5 children:
Sarah, Jonathan Jr., Rebecca, Daniel, John Oakes, Sr.

Married 4th wife, Abigail Whitney (Rand) on April 26, 1762, in Harvard, MA.

      Their 8 children:
Lois, Levi, Permelia, Lucy, Solomon Sr., Sybil, Abel, William Oakes, Sr.

Jonathan was called "Captain" because he fought in the French & Indian Wars. He served under General Wolfe at Quebec & fought on Plains of Abraham on 09/13/1759.
In later years, after moving to Canaan, ME, he added an "s" to his last name, making it "Oaks"; his children started adding an "e" to it, making it "Oakes". He was totally blind for several years before he died.
