Excepting for a few years in Claremont, he spent the most of his life in Cornish. Was prominent in the town affairs, a leading Democrat, a ready debater, public spirited and deeply interested in everything that tended to promote the welfare of the town. He was a gunsmith by trade and carried his art to a high state of excellence, and had a wide reputation of manufacturing rifles and other firearms of as good quality as any manufactures of his time.

He died 10 June, 1877 and is buried in Comings Cemetery in Cornish, NH.

After Mr. Hilliard's death his widow m Cleb H. Pool, a blacksmith, who d. June 3, 1888. She died in Cornish April 17, 1908.

    Children:
Charles Nelson , b June 5, 1836, in Claremont, NH
George Elbridge, b Aug. 26, 1838, in Ludlow, VT.

Notes: DH Hilliard's gun designs are similar to Nicantor Kendall's for the simple reason that Hilliard worked with Kendall before starting his own gun factory in Cornish sometime around 1840. The Cornish Historical Society has a diary of DH Hilliard documenting his activity in the area to collect various parts for his guns. He made rifles (0.36 caliber) shotguns and pistols. His Fowler shotguns are sought by collectors today.

It is said that during the civil war he brought a wagon load of his guns to Concord, NH for the war effort.

The buildings he used as his factory can be seen today in Cornish.
