Abstract: Livermore, Samuel, 1732-1803. Prominent New Hampshire landowner and statesman, whose descendants

included public figures and clergymen. Papers include correspondence of several Livermore descendants,

particularly items written by Arthur Livermore (1766-1853) during his time in Congress, and many papers

related to members of Edward Livermore's (1815-1886) immediate family. Legal papers include two deeds

of property transfer, items related to the estate of Horace Bliss (c1802-c1878), and diplomas and certificates

    of church office.

    Biographical

    Note:

A descendant of English immigrant John Livermore (1604-1684), Samuel Livermore was born in Waltham,

Massachusetts on May 15, 1732 to parents Samuel Livermore and Hannah Brown. Livermore passed the

bar in 1756 and movd to Portsmouth, NH, in 1758. In that city in 1759, Livermore married Jane Browne

(1734-1820), daughter of Rev. Arthur Browne. Livermore rose to become a prominent statesman and

landowner, with extensive properties in Holderness, NH. He had a successful legal career, working as a

lawyer (1756-1769), judge (1769-1774), and chief justice (1782-1789). He also held many important elected

positions, including: member of Continental Congress (1780-1782, 1785-1786), member/president of state

constitutional conventions (1788, 1791), United States Congressman (1789-1793), and United States

Senator (1792, 1793-1801). Livermore is widely recognized as having been instrumental in New Hampshire'

s decision to adopt the Federal constitution in 1788. Samuel Livermore died on May 18, 1803 in Holderness

NH. By that time, other members of his family were also public figures, most notably his sons Arthur

Livermore (a judge, state senator, and United States Congressman from NH) and Edward St. Loe Livermore

(a judge and United States Congressman from MA). Others of his descendants worked as Episcopal

pastors, perhaps carrying on part of Jane Browne Livermore's legacy of commitment to the Church.

    Scope and

    Content:

The Livermore family papers consist of correspondence and legal documents, with a few items of personal

papers in some series. The correspondence consists of letters written to and by various members of the

family from the period of time spanning 1807-1935. There are two areas of correspondence of particular

note. The first is series 1001.1, which includes letters written by Arthur Livermore (1766-1853) to his wife,

Louisa Bliss Livermore (1791-1871), several of which were written from Washington, D.C., during his time as

United States Congressman. The second area of note includes the items in series 1001.2-6. Collectively,

these papers represent the correspondence of several members of the family of Edward Livermore (1815-

1886) and Mary Stuart Livermore (1828-). Legal documents of note include two deeds of property,

conferring land in Holderness, NH, to Samuel Livermore by Gov. John Wentworth, and land in Londonderry,

NH, to Samuel Livermore Blain by Samuel Livermore. There are also numerous papers related to the estate

of Horace Bliss (brother of Louisa Bliss Livermore), and documents related to the receipt of diplomas or

    church offices.
