    __________

Ellis Russell and Jane Catherine Wolcott married in Windsor, CT, perhaps moved to Hadley MA, and were then in Springfield, MA by 1773. He purchased land to the south of Pecousic Brook which runs from East Longmeadow, passes near the present Franconia Golf Course in Longmeadow, MA, and then into Springfield's Forest Park. This land was initially in Springfield but became part of Longmeadow in 1783. By 1801 he lived on Long Hill in Springfield, but his whereabouts have not been determined after 1804 (age 74). "There is no further record of Ellis and Jane in MA. They may have accompanied son Oliver, when he moved circa 1804 to Phelps, Ontario, NY." He seems to have been a landowner but not necessarily a farmer.

Their 13 WARNER children: some born in CT, MA, and NY.

    13 WARNER children:
    1. Polly Warner Adams (4/27/1779-1861).
    Probably TWINS with
    2. Wareham Warner (8/21/1779-1854).
    3. Lucinda J. (Warner) Pembrook (1781-1825).
    4. Lucretia Warner (1783-1803).
    5. David Calvin Warner (1785-1876).

    12. John Warner (1797-1871).
    13. Luther Warner (1798-1850).

After Mary's husband David died in 1831, some of her children (Harriet Warner and her husband Sylvester Rice) helped her move to MI in 1844 in a covered wagon, and there was an exciting tale about her trip--a pie chest, a flat boat at Buffalo, NY--a storm--a change in travel plans--an overland journey--which continues to be told to this day at the MI Warner Reunions, held continuously since 1915. Had Mary not followed her intuition, she and the Rice family would have drowned as other travelers did on that fateful boat ride. Consider, too, that two of her brothers drowned at the same time in 1783 when she was 29 years old, so she would have been especially wary of Lake Erie and stormy clouds in the sky.

It would seem possible that Mary's name would appear in some MI census search between 1840 and her death in April 1846, even if only as a "female over 70..."

Her husband, David-5 C. Warner Sr., was a Revolutionary War soldier as was his brother Jesse-5 Warner Jr. and their father, Jesse-4 Warner Sr.

Mary is buried in the Warham/Wareham Warner burial plot in Albion, Calhoun, MI. On her headstone is etched:

"Friends nor physicians could not save
my mortal body from the grave.
nor can this grave confine me here
when Christ doth call I must appear."

Copied from a page in Leslie Dalton Crunk's book; "The History of Charles Dalton":

"Robert Berry married Elnora Warner in 1842 in Reading, [Hillsdale Co.,] Michigan. They had two children, Rosetta Mary and Charles Alma Berry. This family left Michigan with a caravan for the west to Nauvoo [IL]. As the work was scarce in Nauvoo, Robert Berry decided to return to Michigan, leaving his family in Nauvoo with her family....As Elnora did not receive letters or money from Robert, she was persuaded to believe that he had left her and would never return. Simon Cooker Dalton, who was the postmaster in Nauvoo at this time, became her ardent and persistent suitor and admitted many years later when he was a old man with a family in Utah that he had confiscated her mail!

"Meantime Robert Berry returned to Nauvoo to get his family. He found the city deserted and his family gone. It is claimed that so great was his grief that his hair turned white overnight. Robert Berry, not knowing where to find his family returned to Michigan with a broken heart.

"Later in life, Robert Berry's daughter, Rosetta [Mary], whose father-in-law was on his LDS mission to Michigan, found Robert Berry. Robert then found out about the story of what Simon had done. Robert Berry was heard to say that if he ever met Simon Dalton, he would kill him! Years later he did go west to find Simon, and at his field gate in Centerville, Utah, Robert said to Simon, "I have always claimed that I would kill you, but I will let the Lord take care of you!"
