    Governor, State of Rhode Island 1775-1778.

    Rhode Island Governor. Nicholas was born to Daniel Cooke and his wife Mary Power. Early in his life he became a very prominent and prosperous sea captain and later a successful merchant. On September 23, 1740 he married Mary Sabin and would have 12 children. After two terms as Deputy Governor of Rhode Island, in 1768 and 1775, he was unanimously elected to be Governor and served as the first Governor after independence was declared. He served until 1778 when he declined another term. He is recognized by the Gaspee Days Committee as being a co-conspirator for providing materials used in the burning of the British Revenue Schooner HMS Gaspee in 1772. He was originally buried in a plot on his land in Providence. However, in 1844 his remains, and that of his family, were removed to their present resting place. (bio by: Matthew Fatale)

    Joseph Carpenter and his wife, Persis Rawson, removed from Providence, Rhode Island to Uxbridge, Massachusetts in 1772.

    The epitaph on Joseph Carpenter's gravestone reads: "Farewell my friends and childen dear, I've left this world of pain, May virtue be your practice here, Til we do meet again."

    Intentions for marriage may have been filed in Milford, MA on 6 May 1770.

    Capt. George Carpenter was a past owner of the property once known as 'Shuttle Shop." The "Shuttle Shop" made many of the shuttles used in Uxbridge Mills. It was located on Drabble Tail Brook near the center of town and less than one-eighth
    of a mile from the Mumford River. This brook overflowed its banks annually onto Main Street until it was enclosed beneath granite blocks from eh river under Main Street up to the Shuttle Shop property.
