    The surname Barrows was variously spelled in ancient times. Burroughs, Burrows, Burrow, and Borows were common in the early American records.



    John Barrows (Barrow ro Borowe), the immigrant ancester, was born in England and came to New England, sailing from the port of Yarmouth, having taken the examination to go to New England, stating his age as twenty-eight and that of his wife
    Anne, as forty. He was a Cooper by trade. He was a proprietor of Salem, MA, May 10, 1637. Afterwards he removed to Plymouth. It is believed that he was related to Jeremiah Barrows or Burrows of Scituate and Marshfield. In 1665, John
    Barrows was of Plymouth where he died in 1692. He seems to have had a second wife, Deborah.

    Robert Barrows had a brother Thomas who also came from Plymouth, Mass and settled in Mansfield, Folland County, Conn. He married Esther Hall, daughter of Isaac Hall, June 14, 1741, and from these two brothers (Robert and Thomas) all the
    Barrows of the Town of Mansfield, descended.
