    Biographies of Croydon, Sullivan County, New Hampshire

    EZEKIEL POWERS, son of Ezekiel and Hannah Hall Powers, was born in 1771, and was the first male child born in town. At the age of nineteen he married Susan Rice, and subsequently Lydia Lane and Lois Barden, and had twenty-one children-four sons and seventeen daughters; fifteen of the latter grew to womanhood, and were characterized by those qualities which distinguish the Powers family. Like his father he was remarkable for great physical power. At the age of eighty he weighed 265 pounds. He had a great memory, and was a lover of fun.

    Ezekial Powers had many children, 21 in total.

    There is some uncertainty about some of the children and marriages.

    1. Lydia Lane, 2nd wife supposedly died 8 February 1820; however, he supposedly married 3rd wife Lois Bardeen 16 August 1819. I suspect the actual date was 8 February 1819, the day after the daughter Lois was born.

    2. Is Lois Powers a daughter of 2nd or 3rd wife? And was she born 7 February 1819 or 1820? I am recording this as she was born in 1819 and her mother died shortly afterwards. As her father married for the third time a few months later, she was named after the third wife. I would not be expected for her to have been born to third wife less that 6 months after she was married.

    3. Some sources give one daughter Laura Linda Powers, born and died April 1832 in Croydon. Others show 2 twin daughters Laura and Linda born and died in 1831.

    Presidential First Lady.

    She was born Abigail Powers in rural Saratoga County, New York to a prominent Baptist preacher who died early in her life leaving her mother to fend for herself with two small children.

    She home schooled Abigail providing her with an excellent education using her dead husband's library of many books. The family was now living in New Hope, New York while Abigail was enrolled in a recently opened academy where Millard Fillmore was also a student. He had little education and was a former indentured servant working in the textile industry. She encouraged him to study law while she began teaching school. She was instrumental in a campaign to raise funds which resulted in the first circulating library in the State of New York.

    Two years later they were married and she continued working until the birth of their son. Attaining prosperity, Millard became interested in politics. He first became a Congressman, then state comptroller and finally Vice President.

    With Zachary Taylor's death, the Fillmore's moved into the White House. Abigail realized she lacked social graces, and entrusted many social duties to her attractive daughter, "Abby." The White House had no books, and she established the first library after receiving an appropriation from Congress and personally supervised their selection and purchase.

    President Millard Fillmore's tenure in the White House was over. At the outdoor inauguration of his successor, President Pierce, Abigail returned to the Willard Hotel chilled, developed pneumonia and died . The House of Representatives and the Senate adjourned and public offices closed in respect. The family took her home to Buffalo and she was interred in the Fillmore family plot in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Today her children, her husband, her mother and her husband's second wife surround her.
