    From FindaGrave:

    Heiress, Collector, Philanthropist, Style Icon,

Daughter of James Roche, 3rd Baron of Fermoys, and Frances Ellen Work. Maternal grand-aunt of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Daring and skillful, Mrs. Cary was an exceptional automobilist, being one of the first ladies of her time to own an automobile. An accomplished horsewoman, she usually won first place at the Piping Rock Horse Show, sometimes held at her Locust Valley estate, 'Oak Hill'. In the field of dancing Mrs. Cary was unquestioned for her style and vivacity. A golfer, Mrs. Cary regularly played with her friend Mrs. Burns MacDonald at the Newport Country Club. Proud of her Anglo-Irish heritage, Mrs. Cary's name appeared on 'the' Mrs. Astor's "400", a list that described the socially prominent of New York. Mrs. Cary spent her summers at her childhood home in Newport, Rhode Island, 'Elm Court' and it was there that she married her second husband, Guy Fairfax Cary, a partner in the New York law firm Shearman, Sterling & Wright. Commanding in nature, self-assured and confident in her way of life, Cynthia Cary always carried with her a signature pink parasol, her trademark stamp, which she used to protect her complexion from the sun. A passionate collector of English and European decorative art books, Cynthia's collection contained nearly 200 books and magazines pertaining to furniture, decor and ornaments dating to the late 15th century up to the early 19th century. In 1981, Mrs. Cary's son, Guy Fairfax Cary Jr., donated the collection in it's entirety to the Redwood Library and Athenaeum of Newport, Rhode Island, in honor of Cynthia Cary's memory.

    Notes:

    From FindaGrave:

PLATT--Sheila M., On May 15 Sheila Maynard Platt, of New York, NY, died peacefully, at her home in Manhattan, at the age of 81. The cause of death was heart failure, brought on by the auto immune disease, scleroderma, which she endured with dignity and a bright, resolute spirit, for many years.

Sheila was a child of New York City, and died only a few blocks from where she was born, on August 1, 1936, at Doctors' Hospital, the only daughter of Eileen Burden and Walter Maynard, an investment banker, and a former governor of the New York Stock Exchange.

She could have chosen an easy and predictable existence in the old neighborhood, but instead packed her life with adventure, discovery and risk, traveling widely to postings around the world with her devoted diplomat husband, Nicholas Platt. In Taiwan, during the early nineteen sixties, she shared a cup of tea with Generalissimo and Madame Chiang Kai Shek, and learned to speak fluent Mandarin, a language which she kept up for the rest of her life. Living in Hong Kong, during the tumultuous years of the Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution, she began her long and distinguished career in the field of crisis management and psychiatric social work as a volunteer caseworker helping to process the floods of refugees who were coming across the border from China.

For the rest of her long life, in addition to raising three large, loving, and sometimes unruly sons, and ministering to her expanding brood of devoted grandchildren, Sheila continued to work on behalf of the suffering and the less fortunate -- placing Korean orphans with adoptive parents during her time in Tokyo, serving as a mental health advisor to the University Health Clinic of Zambia, and the US embassy in Manila, when her husband was posted as the US ambassador to both countries.

Later, in New York, she authored a series of ground breaking manuals and workshops for staff members on crisis management and post traumatic stress, which are still in use at the United Nations, UNICEF and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. The manuals drew on personal experience with embattled caregivers at refugee camps in Hong Kong, the Philippines, the Afghan border and Bosnia.

Sheila was a loyal and proud alumna of the Brearley School, in New York City, Miss Porter's School, in Farmington, Connecticut, and Radcliffe College, where she studied for three years, before making the brash decision to marry her husband, and set sail around the world. She would later earn a bachelor of arts degree from Trinity University, in Washington DC, in 1971, and a Masters Degree in Social Work from The Catholic University School of Social Work, in 1973.

Sheila gave her time to many causes and institutions throughout her life, including the Austen Riggs Center, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where she was a board member for many years, and Community and Family Services International, in Manila, a relief organization which she helped to found, and would serve for many years, as a board member and patron. She was also a board member of Scenic Hudson, and a member of the Council of Foreign Relations, in New York City.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Nicholas Platt, her sons, Adam, Oliver, and Nicholas Jr., all of New York City, her daughters-in-law, Kate Platt, Camilla Campbell, and Robyn Watts, her gaggle of grandchildren, Lily, George, Clare, Noah, Henry, Nico, Jane, Penelope, and her two brothers, John Maynard and Walter Maynard Jr, of Groton, MA and New York City.

There will be a memorial service for Sheila at the Brick Presbyterian Church, at 1140 Park Avenue on June 1st, at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, please direct your generosity to the Sheila and Nicholas Platt Endowment for Public Policy Programs at the Asia Society, 725 Park Ave. NY, NY 10021.

    Notes:

    From FindaGrave:

Social Reformer and British Royalty. Born The Honourable Diana Frances Spencer, she was the fourth child, third daughter, of Edward John Spencer and Frances Ruth Burke Roche, then Viscount and Viscountess Althorp.

Her parents separated in 1967 and were divorced in 1969.

She was a member of an aristocratic English family that had served the crown for generations. Her father had been an equerry (an officer charged with supervision of the horses belonging to a royal household) to King George VI, father of Queen Elizabeth, from 1950-1952 and also to the Queen herself for the first two years of her reign. Her childhood playmates included the Queen's sons, the Princes Andrew and Edward. Upon the death of her grandfather, the 7th Earl Spencer, in 1975,

Diana inherited the title of "Lady" and moved to Althorp, a stately mansion built in 1508 in the English Midlands. It was there where she struck up a conversation with Prince Charles during a shoot in November 1977. There wasn't talk of a relationship between Charles and Diana until late-1980, when Diana worked as a part-time kindergarten teacher in London. It was during this time that the media interest in Diana intensified. She would be trailed by photographers for the rest of her life.

The engagement of Lady Diana and Prince Charles was announced on February 24, 1981, and they were married at St. Paul's Cathedral in London on July 29, 1981, amidst members of nearly every royal house in the world and a TV and radio audience of 750 million.

This fulfilled a Spencer family dream: An ancestor, also named Lady Diana Spencer 1710-1735, almost married Frederick, Prince of Wales, in the early-1700s. The match was encouraged by her grandmother, Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, but was eventually broken up by the wishes of King George II.

Upon her marriage, Diana's full title was "Her Royal Highness, The Princess Charles, Princess of Wales, Countess of Chester, Duchess of Cornwall, Duchess of Rothesay, Countess of Carrick, Baroness of Renfrew, Lady of the Isles, and Princess of Scotland." Although the style was incorrect, she was popularly referred to as "Princess Diana."

Diana and Charles had two children: Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, born in 1982, and Prince Henry Charles Albert David, born in 1984.

Diana was famous for her groundbreaking fashion choices, but she also broke barriers in the late 1980s when she was the first celebrity to be photographed shaking hands with an AIDS patient without a glove. She touched leprosy patients in the poorest parts of the world without concern for her own health.

Diana and Charles separated in December 1992 and were divorced on August 28, 1996, upon which Queen Elizabeth II stripped her of the title of "Her Royal Highness" and decreed she be addressed in the future as "Diana, Princess of Wales."

Upon her separation, and after her divorce, Diana redefined herself: She cut the number of charities she supported to a handful and, in the last year of her life, became passionate about banning antipersonnel land mines in war-weary Third World Countries.

She died in an automobile accident in the underpass of the Place D'Alma Bridge in Paris, France, shortly after midnight on Sunday, August 31, 1997, along with Dodi Fayed, son of Harrods Department Store owner Mohamed Al-Fayed, and driver Henri Paul. A fourth passenger, Dodi's bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, survived the crash, but required extensive plastic surgery for his injuries. The Flame of Liberty sculpture near the site of the accident serves as an unofficial monument to Diana. There is also a memorial to both Diana and Dodi Fayed erected at Harrods Department Store in London.
