    Dr. Strong was born in South Coventry, Conn. and passed away in Philadelphia, Penn. He was the son of Deacon Benajah Strong and Lucy Bishop. He married Rebecca Young on September 8, 1796 at Philadelphia, PA.

    Dr. Joseph Strong was graduated in 1788 at Yale College. He studied medicine under Dr. Lemuel Hopkins of Hartford, 1788-1790, and Dr. Benjamin Rush at the School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, 1791-1792. Strong first practiced at Middletown, CT, was a surgeon's mate in the legion of General Anthony Wayne in the Ohio campaign against the Indians (appointed 4 may 1792, resigned 1 May 1796) and lived thereafter in Philadelphia.

    A leading local physician, he was also a major promoter of the Philadelphia Society for the Encouragement of Domestic manufactures, invented the axle tourniquet for the control of bleeding during surgical operations (patent dated 29 Jan 1801), and died intestate, aged 42 years, 1 month, and 14 days, of yellow fever.
