Joseph Strong and his family moved from Northampton to Coventry, in March, 1716, seven years after its first settlement; he was a prosperous farmer. His town offices included: town treasurer in 1716; selectman for six years; and Justice of the Peace for many years beginning in 1723. In 1721, the first year that Coventry was represented in the Colonial Legislature, he was sent as the representative of the town. At the time there were two annual sessions of the Legislature, in May and October. Justice Strong was elected 52 times to the Legislature and served 65 sessions in the Connecticut General Assembly. He was moderator of the first Coventry town-meeting on April 23, 1718, and often afterwards, holding the office until April 11, 1763, at aged 90. He served in the Colonial Legislature until May 1762, at aged 89; his son Phinehas was the other representative with him from Coventry.

Justice Joseph Strong was the 6th great-grandfather of Diana Frances Spencer, Princess of Wales, and the 7th Great grandfather of Prince William of Wales, heir to the British throne. From FindaGrave:

Florence Fox Harrop wrote: "Benajah was born in the year 1740 and at the time of the breaking out of the Revolution was in the prime of life, of fine physique, standing six feet two inches in his stockings, a stalwart, resolute, bold spirited man. He took an active part in the war, and was promoted to the rank of captain in his regiment. He was a cousin of the martyr patriot Nathan Hale, with whom he served.

"After the war, Banajah Strong moved from Haddam, CT to New York and settled on the Hudson River, having received from the government the right to operate a ferry across the river from the present site of Athens which was his farm. A few years later, he sold out his land, and started westward. He stopped for a while at the present site of Ithaca, then in the wilderness, but finding the location to be unhealthy, he moved around the head of the lake to higher ground and bought a large tract of land from the government in what was afterward the township of Lansing. Here he made his home until death called him home at the age of ninety six."

Following the death of his wife Jane Cochrane, he moved westward, briefly settling at Great Bend, Pennsylvania. He appears on the census of 1810 in Cayuga County, New York, where he met and married in 1818, Abigail Newland Powers, widow of Lemuel Powers. (Abigail Newland b. Feb 22 1758 in Mass,d. Feb 21 1838 in Lansing,NY.) They moved to, Lansing, Tompkins County, New York, appearing on the 1820 census. Abigail and Lemuel's daughter Abigail was the first wife of Millard Filmore.
