He graduated from Yale in 1837, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1840 and proceeded to practice law in Ohio and in New York in 1846. President Abraham Lincoln appointed him to a commission for cases involving state prisoners in the custody of military authorities in 1862; he was a judge for the New York City Superior Court (1857-60); and was a member of the New York State Constitutional Convention (1867-68). In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him the United States Attorney General serving until 1876, when President Grant appointed him US Minister to Great Britian, serving (1876-77).

After returning to America, he resumed his law practice until his death at age 75.
