Newton psychiatrist
Dr. John H. Lamont, a psychiatrist, died yesterday at his home of complications from cancer. He was 71.
Born in Chicago, Dr. Lamont grew up in Washington Depot, Conn. He graduated from Hotchkiss high school in Connecticut. He graduated from Harvard University in 1943 and from Harvard Medical School in 1946.
An Army veteran, he began his long career in psychiatry 44 years ago as a resident at McLean hospital in Belmont. He was a fellow in child psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1952 to 1954 and an instructor at Marvard Medical School from 1955 to 1969.
In 1956, he became a staff member of the child psychiatry unit at Massachusetts General and was director of the unit from 1961 to 1974. He was a director of the psyschiatric clinic at the New England Home for Little Wanderers from 1989 to 1992 and was active at the New England Baptist Hospital.
He was a psychiatric consultant with the disability quality branch of the Social Security Administration at the time of his death.
Dr. Lamont was a life member of the Boston Athenaeum and a longtime supporter of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He an avid gardener and a member of the Harvard Club.
He belonged to numerous professional organizations including the American Medical Association, the Massachusetts Medical Association, and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
He was a grandson of Robert P. Lamont, former US secretary of commerce under President Hoover.
He leaves his wife, Lorna, and two stepsons, Dr. Barry M Lamont of Boston and Robert C. Burtman of Durham, N.C.
