    2. 87. Willie B. Hall  Descendancy chart to this point was born in May 1862 in Blackstone, Worcester, MA; died in 1922; was buried in Saint Mary Cemetery, Holden, Worcester, MA.

  8. 68.  Samuel Judson Hall Descendancy chart to this point (33.Charlotte3, 5.Stephen2, 1.Joseph1) was born on 8 Sep 1832 in Uxbridge, Worcester, MA; died on 5 Mar 1862 in New Bern, NC; was buried in New Bern National Cemetery, New Bern, NC.

    Other Events:

    • American Civil War: 1861-1865, Company C, Roanoke Island, NC; Massachusetts 25th Infantry, Burnsides Coast Division

    Notes:

Samuel Judson Hall was a bootmaker by trade.

Samuel Judson Hall was a soldier with the 25th Massachusetts Infantry. He mustered in on 14 Oct 1861 in Mendon, MA with Company C. He was wounded in battle on 8 Feb 1862 on Roanoke Island, NC and died 5 Mar 1862 on Roanoke Island, NC. This
information is in accordance with the Adjutant General's Office Memorandum, Washington, August 2, 1867. The ship that brought the 25th to Roanoke Island was the New York.

According to New Bern National Cemetery Records, however, his date of death was 15 Feb 1862.

According to the letter that his brother Stephen Carpenter Hall wrote home to his sister-in-law, Rachel Marion (Daniels) Hall, his brother William's wife, it is assumed that the date of 15 Feb 1862 is in error. Stephen states he saw Samuel quite often while he was sick. Three days is not enough time to warrant such a statement.

The following is an excerpt from a letter written by Stephen Carpenter Hall dated 26 May 1862 to his sister-in-law (sister, he writes) Marion (Rachel Marion Hall, wife of William Henry Hall, Stephen's and Samuel's oldest brother):

"You spoke about Sam. As John took care of him he knew more about him than I do (did), but he had the nerve of being as brave as any of us. They said that when he fell they returned to help him off. He told them to never mind him, but go ahead and give it to them. I saw him quite often while he was sick. He always seemed in very good spirits and I was in hopes he would get well. Poor fellow, he must have suffered a great deal."

Samuel Judson Hall is interred at New Bern National Cemetery, New Bern, NC, Section 8, Grave No. 1338.

Pension File for Samuel J. Hall showed his widow, Susan, filed on 10 November 1862, Application No. 5894, Certificate No. 3801.

  9. 69.  John Dillon Hall Descendancy chart to this point (33.Charlotte3, 5.Stephen2, 1.Joseph1) was born on 19 Mar 1834 in Uxbridge, Worcester, MA; died on 19 Mar 1885 in Springfield, Hampden, MA; was buried in Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, Hampden, MA.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: Bootmaker, Wholesale Fruit.
    • American Civil War: 1861-1865, Company D, Wounded At Petersburgh, Va 18 Jun 1864; 25th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry

    Notes:

John Dillon Hall was a Civil War soldier in the Union Army. His name can be found on the Civil War Monument in the center of East Douglas.

John Dillon Hall enlisted Sep 14, 1861, Private, Co. D, 25 Reg't Mass. Infantry at Camp Lincoln at the age of 27 for a period of 3 years.

    Appointed Corporal , Jan 2, 1863.

John Dillon Hall reenlisted Jan 2, 1864 at Newport News, VA for a period of 3 years.

He was a man with light brown hair, brown eyes and ligh complexion and stood a height of 5 feet, 5 1/4 inches tall.

On Jun 18, 1864, John Dillon Hall was wounded in action at Petersburg, VA. The Army had listed him as a deserter from furlough, but through three pieces of correspondence, it was discovered that the had no use of one of his legs and probably
never would regain that use. The three pieces of correspondence were written to Dr. McClellan and signed by Dr. Geo. W. Warren, M.D.

John Dillon Hall received an Certificate of Disability Discharge from the Army of the United States on Jul 25, 1865. At that time he was a Corporal under 1st Lieutenant Charles C. Murdock, Co. D of the 25th Reg't of the Mass. Vol.

Pension File for John D. Hall showed he filed for pension on 24 Oct 1865 as invalid, Application No. 93665, Certificate No. 64468. His widow, Mandana, filed 12 Jul 1890, Application No. 430539, Certificate No. 331714 in Massachusetts.

(Research):The Uxbridge, MA Vital Records show John Milton Hall as his birth name. However, a family bible dated 1829, which was a gift to Alvah and Charlotte (Carpenter) Hall on their wedding day, 5 Jul 1829 had four slips of paper in it when Joseph S.
Hall, Sr. received it from his mother's estate. Those slips of paper, 8 1/2 x 11 in size, had births, deaths and marriages of family members written on them. Those family records show John D. Hall instead of John M. Hall with the same date of
birth. To further this, the vital records in West Boylston, MA state that John D. Hall, son of Alvah and Charlotte Hall married Mandana M. Lawrence on 16 Jul 1853. Therefore, it is founded by evidence that the Uxbridge Vital Records are in
error and the middle initial is D for Dillon, not M for Milton.

    Notes:

Stephen Carpenter Hall was a Civil War soldier in the Union Army. His name can be found on the Civil War Monument in the center of East Douglas.

Stephen Carpenter Hall wrote a letter home dated 26 May 1862 to his brother William Hall's wife, Marion. At the time, Stephen Carpenter Hall was a member of Burnside's Coast Division, 25th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers at Camp Bullock.
    The letter reads:

    "Dear Sister,

I am seated to answer your letter after so long I had almost forgotten all about your letter. I have had a good deal of guard duty to do since I receive your letter and you know that I hate to write as bad as I would to eat a good meal of vitals. Well we are encamp about eleven miles from Newbern doing picket duty. We have to go on once in three days. It would be quite pleasant if it was not for the rain. It rains about every day. You spoke about Sam. As John took care of him he knows more about him than I do, but he had the nerve of being as brave as any of us. They said that when he fell they returned to help him off. He told them to never mind him, but go ahead and give it to them. I saw him quite often while he was sick. He always seemed in very good spirits and I was in hopes he would get well. Poor fellow, he must have suffered a great deal. I received a letter from George the other day. He said that he had heard that John had been wounded, but it is not so. Well we have a good time. It is very warm here. The mosquitoes and ticks are very thick. John sends his love to you all. Well give my love to Susan and keep a good share of it yourself and William. Well, good bye.

    from your brother

    Stephen Hall
