Mr. Olmstead received a degree in physics from Allegheny College in 1935 and two degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT in 1937. He retired in 1972 as president of the former Eaton Dikeman Co. in Mt. Holly Springs. He also had a second career as a military historian with special expertise in Civil War ordnance pieces, about which he co-authored two books titled, "Field Artillery Weapons of the Civil War" in 1983 and "The Big Guns" in 1997.
