O'Shea is included in the list of fifty most numerous surnames in Ireland with an estimated number of nearly twelve thousand persons so called, if we include Shea, Shee and O'Shee, (Variants of the same name) in the total. In Irish it is O Seaghdha, I.e. descendant of Seaghdha: this word means hawk-like and hence dauntless. The O'Sheas are primarily a Kerry sept. They were Lords of Iveragh but their power declined there from the twelfth century onwards, though not their numbers, for it is there that the great majority of O'Sheas are found even at the present day. Some of the lading members of the sept migrated to Co. Tipperary and we find Odoneus O'Shee recorded as Lord of Sheesland in Co. Tipperary in 1381. In the next century their sphere of influence moved to the adjoining county of Kilkenny: Robert Shee was Sovereign (I.e. Chief burgess) of the city of Kilkenny in 1499, and the well known family, now represented by the Poer O'Shees of Gardenmorris and Sheestown, Co. Kilkenny, come into prominence there about that time. Of the so-called Ten Tribes of Kilkenny the Shees (the only ones of Milesian blood), were the most influential; the Rothes and the Archers were next in importance (the others were Archdekin, Cowley, Knaresborough, Langton, Lawless, ley and Ragget). The form Shee and O'Shee is based on the anglified pronunciation of Shea (cf. O'Dea and Dee) and is not met with often outside Co. Kilkenny. Sir William Shee (1804-1868), M.P. for Kilkenny was the first Catholic judge in Ireland since the Revolution of 1690. Capt. Robert O'Shea was a devoted follower of Prince Charlie and was with him at Culloden. He was an officer of the Irish Brigade in France. At least five others of the name (O'Shee in France) were distinguished officers. The son of one of them became a peer of France. Sir Martin Archer Shee (1769-1850) was the President of the Royal Irish Academy (London) for twenty years. Daniel Shee (1777-1836) was an orientalist who was expelled from Dublin University for refusing to give evidence against his friends among the United Irishmen. John Dawson Gilmary O'Shea (1824-1892) was an American historian of note, whose father, a leader in Irish-American affairs, went to the U.S.A. in 1815. The murder of the twelve year old boy Denis Shea in 1851 is a shocking commentary on the evils of landlordism at that period. The name O'Shea is of course intimately associated with the fall of Parnell.

Donald A. Chapman, 89 of Normal, IL, formerly of Lowell, died at 5:15 a.m., Sunday - January 23, 2011 at Sugar Creek Care Center, Normal, IL.

He was born December 12, 1921 in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, the son of George H. and Anna Hall Chapman. He moved to Lowell, MA and graduated from Lowell High School and Northeastern University in Boston, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1943. He served in the United States Army from 1943-46, with duty in the Pacific theater.

He married Dorothy J. O'Donnell April 13, 1946 in Lowell, and began his career with General Electric Co. in Lowell and Fitchburg, MA before moving to Schenectady, New York in 1947. In 1954, he moved to Normal, IL as one of the original engineers who opened the GE General Purpose Control plant in Bloomington, and later was appointed manager of the Manufacturing Engineering Department. In 1972, he became general manager of the GE plant in Avon Lake, Ohio, and in 1974, general manager of the GE plant in Selmer, Tennessee. He retired in 1984, returned to Bloomington in 2003 and moved back to Normal in 2010. The Chapmans also enjoyed their summer home in Laconia, NH from 1989-2009.

He is survived by his wife, sons Alan (Kathie), Barry (Jessie Norris), and Pete (Linda), daughter Nancy (Joel) Kindle, grandchildren Matt (Carrie) Chapman, Heather (Nate) Damery, and Todd (Corin) Chapman, Elizabeth (Matt Mitchell) Majerus, John Kindle, James Kindle, Rory and Ryan Chapman, Ashley Aubrey and Adam Lopez, 7 great-grandchildren, and brother-in-law Richard Sykes of Laconia, NH.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Myrtle Sykes.

He was formerly a member of United Methodist churches in New York, Illinois, and Tennessee, and a United Church of Christ in Ohio, and was currently a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Bloomington.

Fay McCabe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Blanche F. (Hall) Grenier, 87

Blanche F. (Hall) Grenier, 87, a longtime resident of Upton, died Thursday, February 11, 2016 at her daughter's home in Cherry Valley after an illness. She worked for Hanover Insurance in Worcester for 20 years, retiring in 1992.

Blanche was born in Worcester, a daughter of the late Maurice and Aurora (Belanger) Hall, and was a 1946 graduate of Grafton High School. She was a communicant of St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish and a member of the Upton Woman's Club, the Red Hat Society, and the Westboro Chorus.

She leaves four daughters, Terri Smith and her husband Ian of Middleborough, Maureen Croteau and her husband Arthur of Cherry Valley, Diane Hubbard and her husband Gerald of Bridgton, ME, and Claire Flynn and her husband William of Uxbridge; a brother and a sister, Maurice Hall and Constance Noel, both of Upton; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Louise Grenier and the sister of the late Donald and Donalee Hall and Muriel Frederico.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 17 from the Williams-Pedersen Funeral Home, 45 Main St., Upton, with a funeral mass at 11 a.m. in St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 151 Mendon St., Upton. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Upton.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, prior to the mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to VNA Care Hospice, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608.

Donald E. Hall, 68, a lifelong resident of Upton, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, in Milford Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was the husband of Patricia E. (Woodcome) Hall.

Mr. Hall was born in Worcester, a son of the late Maurice and Aurora (Belanger) Hall. He was a 1959 graduate of Northbridge High School and earned a degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in 1964. He served with the U. S. Army during the Vietnam era, attaining the rank of 1st Lt. He was an electrical engineer with Alden Electronics, Inc. of Westboro for 30 years, and also worked part-time at Bay State Abrasives for 25 years. He was a member of the National Electrical Engineering Honor Society and a communicant of Holy Angels Parish in Upton.

In addition to his wife of 40 years, he leaves two daughters, Christine Burke and her husband Bruce of Hollis, NH, and Carla Nelson and her husband Matthew of Malden; a granddaughter, Samantha Burke of Hollis; one brother, Maurice Hall, Jr., and two sisters, Blanche Grenier and Constance Noel, all of Upton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late Donalee Hall and Muriel Frederico.

Raymond Carpenter Hall, Jr. died at home at West Hartford Ave., Uxbridge, MA.  He had been suffering from a long illness of cirrhosis of the liver.  He donated his body to science.  The University of Massachusetts took the body for science and education and returned the cremated remains back to the family in Uxbridge.

The cremated remains of Raymond Carpenter Hall, Jr. were buried in the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery in East Douglas, MA on Thursday, February 15, 1996 at 4:00 p.m.

He was a Signalman Third Class (SM3) onboard the USS INTREPID (CVA-11).  He entered active duty on 6 Sep 1956 and received an Honorable Discharge on 1 Oct 1959.  The USS INTREPID was also known as the "Fighting I."  He has spent most of his life as a truck driver, although worked at Draper Machine Shop in Hopedale, MA as a Radial Drill Operator in his earlier adult years.  He also helped run the family dairy business known as Sunnyside Farms in Uxbridge which was on the land owned by Alvah Hall.  The farm was owned and operated by his mother Alice and his father Raymond.  He won second place at the New England Truck Rodeo in a regional competition with 17 other drivers while working for Leaseway Motor Car, Framingham, MA. 

He resided in Uxbridge, MA his entire life.

UXBRIDGE - Joseph S. Hall, Sr., 74, of Uxbridge, died Thursday, May 9, 2013 at home with his family by his side. He was the husband of Jeanette (Silbor) Hall.

Mr. Hall was a lifelong farmer on the family farm Hall's Dairy Farm/Sunnyside Farm located on W. Hartford Ave. He also was employed as a truck driver for Rosenfeld Concrete in Hopedale, Anchor Motor Freight in Framingham, and Aggregate Industries in Boston, retiring in 2004. Mr. Hall was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 170 in Worcester.

He was born Nov. 7, 1938 in Uxbridge, son of the late Raymond C. Hall, Sr. and Alice M. (Belanger) Hall and had attended Uxbridge High School. He was a U. S. Navy veteran and served aboard the USS Intrepid CVA-11. He was also a Freemason.

Mr. & Mrs. Hall observed their 52nd wedding anniversary on Nov. 19, 2012.

Mr. Hall enjoyed dancing- especially the waltz, and gardening around his home.

In addition to his wife Jeanette, he is survived by two sons, Joseph S. Hall, Jr. and his wife Elaine of Blackstone and Randy M. Hall and his wife Christine of Uxbridge; a daughter Robin M. and her husband Robert Mills of Folkston, GA; a sister Mary Christiansen of Uxbridge; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Raymond C. Hall, Jr. and grandchildren, Kevin Hall and Keith Hall.

Visiting hours will be Saturday May 11, 2013 from 9 - 11 AM in the BUMA FUNERAL HOME, 101 N. Main St. (Rte. 122), Uxbridge. Funeral services and burial will be private.
