The son of Spencer and Welthea (Glass) Burgess.

Jacob married Anna L. Peterson, the daughter of Lewis and Julie Ann (Brewster) at Hingham, MA on May 11, 1856. They were the parents of Lelia, born Oct 12, 1856, and William P. (aka Willie) born Oct 29, 1861.

Jacob was a 29 year-old Painter from Duxbury, when he enlisted in that town on May 23, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. E. Per records he was 5 ft. 10 in. tall, with a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on an unknown date, but subsequently reduced to the rank of Private on Dec. 27, 1862, a demotion which took effect Nov. 1, 1862.

He was engaged with his Regiment in 1862 at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Shepherdstown, and Fredericksburg. He was reported to have been captured and taken prisoner at the battle of Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1862 and was released on Dec. 31, 1862. He was mustered out of military service on Sept. 2, 1864 at the expiration of his three year enlistment. Just days before Jacob's discharge, his son Willie died after a two week bout with Diptheria on August 27, 1864.

Jacob returned to Duxbury following his discharge, but was a drowning victim at Duxbury on Sept. 26, 1864.

Jacob Burgess and George O. Peterson of Duxbury, the latter having gone through a three years' service in the army unscathed, were drowned in Duxbury harbor on Monday of last week by the upsetting of a boat they were in.
