Theodosia was a nineteenth century feminist and the first woman in America to hybridize flowers and to own and operate a seed and bulb business which she established in 1881 in Ventura, California; she founded California's seed industry.

Her daughter Myrtle Shepherd Francis wrote a book "Theodosia, The Flower Wizard of California" about her that was published in 2014; it can be found on Amazon. I found this all quite interesting; hopefully someone else will as well
