Son of Hezekiah Coates II (b.1789, CT, d.1871, VT) and his first wife, Sophia (Thompson) Coates (1790-1818) of Heath,MA. They were married at Colrain,MA on Sep 2,1810. Hezekiah II married again twice following his first wife's death, first to Eleanor Porter (intentions records about six weeks following Sophia's death), and then to Minerva Pierce (1810-1872). Hezekiah and Minerva were living in Wardsboro,VT in 1870.

Brother of Calvin Coates.

His maternal grandparents were Daniel Thompson and Margaret Davidson Thompson.
