Samuel Hall was baptized 21 May 1648 in New Haven, the son of John Hall and Jeanne Woolen. He married Hannah Walker in May 1668.

From the Boardman Ancestry:
"In 1670, he removed to Wallingford and became one of the founders of that town, with his father, John Hall, and his brothers, John and Thomas. Here he shared in all the experiences of a new settlement, receiving his proportion of the various divisions of land. He drew one of the home-lots that were laid out in 1689 and probably lived there. 'He owned much land in the vicinity of Meriden, several hundred acres over in Cheshire and considerable tracts in New Haven. He had bought Thomas Judd's 'propriety' in Waterbury. He had erected a mill in Wallingford where he sawed lumber and manufactured the wooden dishes which in those days adorned the settlers' tables.'"
"In King Phillip's War, Samuel Hall is numbered among the garrison at Punkapauge, and he became, in 1696, Lieutenant of the trainband, being made Captain in 1704. He was also chosen one of the Deacons of the church in 1716, the record being that 'Capt. Hall, Sr., shall sit in the deacon's seat, and Capt. Hall, Jr., in the first pue.' He was also Deputy to the General Court in 1698 and at several sessions later. It is evident that he was one of the most prominent and highly honored men in the town."

8. Mary Hall, (John,1) b. about 1654, m Henry Cook, son of Henry and Judith (Birdsale) Cook of Salem, Mass., born Dec. 30, 1652. She was living at Wallingford with her father and mother when John Hall spoke to her and others (in) his last will in 1676, and was married, probably, at Salem, Sept. 30. 1678. "Henry Cooke marryed to Mary Hale ye last of the 7th mo. 1678." (Salem records, from Collections Essex Institute, Vol. 2, 43.)

Facts hereinafter given show that "Hale" in the foregoing marriage record was intended for Hall. In olden times Hall was spelled "Halle," so that the omission of only a single letter renders the name Hale and we find this done in the Hartford land records before considered, where we know that "Hale" was meant for Hall. One Mary Cook, age 39, died Sept 4, 1695 (Wallingford records), and as she is not accounted for, some have suggested that she was this Mary Hale, the first wife of Henry Cook, and that Mary Hall was his second wife. Henry, son of Henry and Mary, was born 12 years before the death of this Mary Cook, so that he would not have been the son of a second Mary, but in the probate records of the estate of widow Mary Cook, 1718, he is called "her eldest son." This same son Henry quit-claims to his brother Isaac, his right in the "homestead which was our mother's Mary Cook's deed. of Wallingford" Aug. 16, 1720. (Wallingford land, Book 4, 188.) That the first, second, fifth, and eighth of his children were granddaughters of John Hall, and married respectively, Jeremiah How, Joseph Preston, Timothy beach, and Adam Mott, is shown by the following:

We, Jeremiah How ye 2d & Mary his wife, formerly Cook, both of Wallingford, to Daniel Hall, Jr., land that "comes to us on the right of our honored grandfather, Mr. John Hall the first of Wallingford & on the right of our honored father Henry Cook, late of Wallingford, decsd.,", dated March 19. 1729. "Joseph Preston & Jane my wife, of Wallingford" to Daniel Hall, Junior, land "which came by our ancestors as yet not layed out" dated Jan 8, 1724. (Wallingford Land, Book 4, p. 520.)

Timothy Beach & Hannah Beach, both of Walllingford to our brother Isaac Cook of Wallingford, "all our right that we should or might have in or to the seventh division of land * * * that shall or may accrue to us on our grandfather Hall's right & and our father Henry Cook's right;" dated May 24, 1734. Adam Mott & Elizabeth Mott, wife to Adam Mott of Wallingford, to Samuel Hall, "in right of my wife Elizabeth" land that " descends to us from our father Henry Cook of sd (sic) Wallingford & half an acre from our honored grandfather John Hall, deed;" dated Oct 19. 1724. (Wallingford Land, Book 4, p. 454.)

These facts prove that Mary Hall was Henry Cook's first and only wife. She named her first daughter "Mary" for herself, her second daughter "Jane" for her mother, her first son "Henry" for her husband, and her second son "John" for her father. Elizabeth, Jonathan, and David also appear to have been named for the Halls.

Samuel Hall, Jr. was the fourth of eight children born to Samuel and Hannah (Walker) Hall, Sr. on December 10, 1680, in Wallingford, Connecticut. Not much is known about his life. It appears that he married twice. On May 2, 1704, when Love Royce was sixteen, she married Samuel Hall in Wallingford, New Haven County, Connecticut. After Love's death in 1755, he married a Bridget about 1756 probably in Wallingford when he was 66 years old. He died in Wallingford on June 15, 1770, when he was 90.

Samuel Hall and Love (Royce) had the following children:

1. Theophilus Hall was born on 1 April 1707, in Wallingford, New Haven County, Connecticut. He was a minister. He married May Hannah Avery on May 22. He died on March 25, 1767, at Wallingford.

2. Samuel Hall was born on June 7 or 8, 1709, in Wallingford. He died on December 24, 1771.

3. Hannah Hall was born on July 15, 1711, in Wallingford. She married John Street on June 5, 1734. She died on March 25, 1767, at Wallingford.

4. Sarah Hall was born on December 6, 1713, in Wallingford. She married Samuel Hull February 21, 1733. She died on June 11, 1763, at Wallingford.

5. Mehitabel Hall was born on April 25, 1716, in Wallingford.

6. Esther Hall was born on November 7, 1719, in Wallingford.

The son of John & Mary (Lyman) Hall, he graduated Yale College in 1716 and was the pastor of the Congregational Church in Cheshire from 1723 through 1775. On January 12, 1725, Rev. Samuel Hall and Ann Law, daughter of Lt. Gov. Jonathan Law and his wife, Ann (Elliott) Law, were married by her father.

Rev. Samuel Hall married, January 12, 1725, Ann Law, eldest daughter of Governor Jonathan Law (Harvard, 1695) and Ann (Eliot) Law. Ann Eliot was the daughter of Rev. Joseph Eliot of Guilford, and granddaughter of Rev. John Eliot, the Apostle to the Indians, and also of Governor William Brenton of Rhode Island.

Their children were as follows:

The first is Clark, born ye 23rd of July, 1727, A month later, August 23d, is recorded the announcement of the death of their first-born.

The second birth is Jonathan (gift of God), born July 11, 1728; died July 12, 1728.

The third is Benoni (son of trouble), born November 4, 1729; died November 19, 1729.

The following year, September 11, 1730, was born the fourth child, Luce, that is "light," and such she proved to a desolate household. She lived to maturity and married Charles, a son of Wallingford's minister, the Rev. Samuel Whittelsey.

Their fifth child, called Samuel, came to them January 11, 1732, but died in May following from the dread scourge of smallpox.

On May 10, 1733, was born their sixth child, to whom was given the mother's name Ann. She lived to grow up and was married to Rev. Warham Williams (Yale 1745), Fellow and Secretary of Yale College, who preached at North Branford.

On May 31, 1734 a son was born to him, and the father's name was given for the third time (Samuel, "asked for of God"). Great pains were taken with this boy's education. He was carefully prepared for Yale, where he graduated in 1754, his name like his father's standing at the head of his class. But over-application undermined his health, and the year after graduation, at the age of 21, the pride and hope of his parents was cut down by death.

Mary, the eighth child, lived to justify her parents' hopes. She married Deacon Samuel Beach of Cheshire, by whom she had three children, Mary Ann, Luce, and Samuel Ufford Beach. The grandfather's will leaves to these children articles of silver plate and jewelry, besides "a great interest in lands." In the attainments of his son-in-law Mr. Hall took great pride. Mr. Beach was of Yale 1757, became an attorney of great prominence, was a delegate to the convention which framed the Constitution of the United States, and filled many other offices of public trust.
April 2, 1738, was born the ninth child, who was named "Brenton" after the mother's lineal ancestor, Governor William Brenton of Rhode Island, from whom considerable property descended to the family. This son lived to the advanced age of eighty-two years, became the executor of his father's estate, a founder of Meriden and its first representative.

The tenth child of Rev. Samuel and Ann (Law) Hall was Elisha, born March 10, 1740, and graduated at Yale 1764. He married Lois, widow of Jesse Street and daughter of Col. Thaddeus Cook.

The eleventh child, Sarah, born August 8, 1742, married Mr. Hills, who with his wife died previous to 1776, leaving an only child "Catee Hills," to whom the grandfather left by will all his household effects.

The twelfth child, Jonathan, born July 19, 1745, married and settled on the old homestead at Cheshire.

The thirteenth child, born December 17, 1748, "the child of his old age, last and best beloved," was called Abigail (the father's joy). Intimate in the family and for some years under the pastor's instruction, had been a bright and ambitious young man named John Foote, born in 1742, son of John and Abigail (Frisbie) Foote of North Branford. Mr. Foote prepared for Yale, where he graduated in 1765, and later studied theology under Rev. Samuel Hall. The acquaintance thus formed between John Foote and Abigail Hall soon ripened into love, and they were married November 19, 1767. The children by this marriage were unusually talented. The eldest daughter, Lucinda, passed the examination for Yale when twelve years old. John was admitted as freshman at nine years of age. Samuel A. graduated at Yale, received the degree of Doctor of Laws, was twice elected to Congress, and then made Governor of Connecticut.
