Jonathan was born in 1665 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was about 20 years old when he came to Guilford, Connecticut.

He married Anne Bradley on July 17, 1688 by Andrew Leete in Guilford, Connecticut. Anne and Jonathan had nine children. Jonathan died in Guilford August 27, 1747 and is buried beside his wife in the old Hammonassett Cemetery.

The oldest Murray stones in that cemetery are those of Daniel Murray, oldest son of Jonathan and those of his (Daniel's) son Jonathan.
