Notes: Before 1760:
The area that would become Cushing was part of York County, which then covered all of southern Maine.
1760:
When Lincoln County was created (June 19, 1760), the St. George River settlements — including the area of future Cushing — were placed within Lincoln County.
So, from that point forward, the territory that would become Cushing was within Lincoln County jurisdiction.
1789:
The town of Cushing was incorporated (February 7, 1789) from part of St. George Plantation, which already lay in Lincoln County.
Therefore, Cushing officially began its existence as a town within Lincoln County.
1860:
When Knox County was formed (April 1, 1860), Cushing was reassigned to that new county, where it remains today.
