Obituary, Knight Funeral Homes & Crematory (White River Jct., VT), 28 Nov 2018:
West Lebanon, NH - Edward C. "Ted" Lewis , 92, died Friday morning November 23, 2018 at Harvest Hill in Lebanon, NH.
He was born July 7, 1926 in Claremont, NH the second child of Herbert H. Lewis and Rose Anna (Fisher) Lewis. Ted and his older sister Edith were raised by their mother alone after the untimely death of their father in 1928. The strength and willpower of his mother and sister left him with a lifelong appreciation for women's rights and equality.
He grew up in Claremont and graduated from Stevens High School in 1943 before his seventeenth birthday. As part of the war effort he worked in machine shops until he was old enough to enlist in the Navy. After boot camp in Geneva, NY he was assigned to the brand new USS Chicago, a Baltimore class heavy cruiser, headed for the Pacific Theater. The Chicago saw action along the coast of Japan just before V-J day and was one of the first ships to enter Tokyo Harbor for the surrender ceremony ending World War II.
After the war he attended the Franklin Institute in Boston to study architecture, an opportunity that would not have existed for him without the help of the GI Bill. Even late in life he would remark that this was one of the greatest things the government had ever done. After graduation he began his career with the Vermont Marble Company working first at their headquarters in Proctor, Vermont and later in their field offices in Detroit, MI and Boston. While visiting home he was reluctantly talked into a blind date where he met Beverly O'Connor. The date was a success, to say the least, and they were married in June of 1953 at the original Holy Redeemer church on Main Street in West Lebanon.
After settling in West Lebanon he went to work for the architectural firm of Alfred T. Granger Associates in Hanover, NH. In 1956 when an older co-worker named W. Brooke Fleck left to open his own office Ted went along with him. In 1966 he became a full partner and the firm name was changed to Fleck and Lewis Architects. He became the sole owner in 1976, a partner again with his son Craig in 1986, and eventually retired in 1996. Included in the many designs he produced over the years were the award winning replacement for the Holy Redeemer church on Maple street in West Lebanon and the Harvest Hill assisted living facility in Lebanon where Ted and Bev moved in 2017. The firm remains in existence under new owners to this day. While still working he was involved in several professional organizations including the American Institute of Architects and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. Additionally he served as the chairman of the NH State Board of licensure for architects for many years. He was very proud of the fact that five of his employees, including both sons, gained licensure as architects during his tenure.
Ted was a talented and enthusiastic dancer in his youth often frequenting the Roseland Ballroom in Claremont. He was also an avid skier; racing when young and later recreationally. In addition to these pursuits he loved boating on Lake Sunapee. He won many sailboat races and also enjoyed cruising in his 1942 Chris Craft Runabout. Many of his activities were shared with his grandchildren who he adored and who adored him.
He had an interest in team sports as well. He enjoyed recreational basketball and volleyball. From 1974 to 1976 he coached the West Lebanon Youth Hockey team winning a championship in a league of non school-sanctioned teams in 1975. The success of those teams led directly to the acceptance of the sport at the varsity level at Lebanon High School.
Ted and Bev traveled extensively both for work related to his professional organizations and for pleasure. They particularly enjoyed extended stays annually on the Caribbean island of Montserratt and later in North Naples. FL.
Ted was predeceased by his wife Beverly in October of 2017 as well as by his sister Edith Lewis Preston. He is survived by his children Kevin Lewis and his wife Kelly of Clayton, NY; Craig Lewis and his wife Ellen of Enfield, NH; Barbara Lague and her husband Gary of Sunapee, NH and daughter-in-law Tish Lewis of Reading, VT. He also leaves grandchildren Kaleigh, Teddy, Ali, Ryan and Erin; great grandchildren Landon and Rose, and many close nieces and nephews.
The Lewis family wishes to thank all of the staff at Harvest Hill and Bayada Hospice for the wonderful care they have provided. They would also like to thank Deborah Glazer, MD for her care of both Ted and Bev for many years.
A celebration of life will be held on December 8th at 2:00 pm in the Dwinell meeting room at Harvest Hill with burial in the West Lebanon Cemetery at a future date.
Contributions in his memory may be made to BAYADA Hospice, PO Box 1590 Norwich, VT 05055.
