  • Notes
    • From Eleanor Robinson, Jam 2019:

The only thing I knew about the Shedwick's was that my grandmother had several sisters. We visited them when I was a child and one of them, Florence Shedwick, was married and lived in Helena, Montana. My grandmother and I went out there and we saw Glacier National Park and Yellowstone while I was with them. Frances was the youngest, quite the character, and quite interesting to a youngster.

It would not surprise me if the Bispham's were fairly well off. I believe they had land holdings in Barbados.

Florence was married to a Bill something - all I remember was he was my uncle Bill. They had a summer place in Boothbay Harbor, ME where I visited when I was 7 or 8, and later moved to Helena Montana. My grandmother and I went to Montana when I was about 13 or 14 (1947 or 48). Sorry I don't have the last name. My guess as to her death is some time in the 1950's while I was away at college, or maybe while I was in the Marines 1956-58 or 9.

My grandmother didn't have other siblings around after 1959 as far as I know. She visited my husband and I and the kids and we helped her find a place to live with people who took care of elderly people in Guilderland, NY since we had a tiny house and didn't have room to keep her with us. She was there till her death.

I don't recall that Florence had any kids.

My mother moved to Milford Connecticut when I was about six. She worked at Remington Arms as their plant newspaper editor. She met and married Leo Langevin in about 1941

My mother moved to Wilmington DE to live with her parents, and, after she got a job she needed someone to care for me. I lived with my maternal grandparents and her until she was transferred from Dupont in Wilmington to Remington Arms in Bridgeport CT. Then I stayed with my grandparents while she got settled up in CT and then moved up there with her when I was ready to start school full time.

I suspect that the 1940 census period was when she had gone north. The house my grandarents and I were living in at that time was a duplex and the census might have missed that fact and attributed me to the Hudson's, who I suspect were the owners of the building, not the Smead's. We then moved to a single family home in a better neighborhood when my grandfather got a better job. The fall of 1941 is when I think I actually moved to CT. I went to school that fall. And I was there on December 7th and remember it very well. We heard the news on a large dome-shaped radio. The radio was frowning as the news was given. Everybody was so serious and sad.

I was born in Manhatten because my father was a photographer working there. That is all I know about his work. After his death, my mother moved to Wilmington where my grandparents had moved to from Allentown PA.

I think you are right that my mother was born in Buffalo. Betty was either three or four years younger than she was so I think you are correct that she was born in Binghamton, NY.
Mom and Leo were married in Milford Connecticut. I believe Leo was living in Bridgeport, Connecticut when they met. So it was either there or at his parents home in I believe it was Brookfield VT. I visited them once. They lived on a farm on a country road in Vermont. I was seven or eight at the time. I'm not sure what Grandpa Langevin's first name was but I believe it was Albert.

As far as Leo's death, I don't know exactly where or when. I believe he moved to Long Island after they divorced and lived there until his death some time in the 1970's. He and my mom did not keep in touch after the divorce so any info regarding him was third hand.

Mom died in Schenectady, NY. I am not sure of the exact date because my daughter was the one who handled everything. I had moved to Barnstead, NH in 1982 and she stayed in Schenectady close to my daughter who was living in Gansvoort, NY at the time. I believe it was in 1994, but I really am not sure. I was pretty upset because I had very little contact with her during that period since I was running a 45 person Bureau and management takes a lot out of you so I was feeling very guilty.

Aunt Betty married Hugh when her daughters were around 9 and 12. Jane was the oldest and Nancy several years younger. I don't recall if they took Hugh's name, or kept the Gackenbach name. I believe it was when I was in high school around 1948-49. They were married in Wilmington DE. She died in Cape May NJ after they moved there when Hugh retired. She had pancreatic cancer. By the way, thanks for the last names, I couldn't remember.
