    • Arnold B. Hale dies at 98; retired farmer, town official

TYRINGHAM--Arnold B. Hale, 98, of 74 Main Road, longtime farmer and former Tyringham selectman, School Committee member and fire chief, died Sunday at Willowood Health Care Center in Great Barrington.

Born in Tyringham on June 12, 1902, son of Clarence W. and Jesse Elizabeth Hathaway Hale, he attended schools there. He attended Lee High School and the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

After graduation, he joined his father and late brother, Willis, in the operation of their farm, Sunset Farm. After his brother's death in 1980, he operated the farm with his son, Donald B. Hale, and his daughter, Alice M. Hale. In 1992, they began a bed and breakfast and, in 1994, opened a restaurant that they operated at the farm.

Mr. Hale first attended church as a child at the Methodist Church in Tyringham, which is now called the Tyringham Union Church. He was its former chairman and moderator. He was a member of the Evening Star Lodge AF&AM of Lee for more than 72 years and former member of the Lee Grange No. 88.

He was a former trustee of the Berkshire County Extension Service and a former member of the Berkshire County Farm Bureau. He also was a former member of Ayrshire Breeders Association of Brandon, Vt., and of American Jersey Cattle Club.

Mr. Hale was the first fire chief for the town of Tyringham, served on the School Committee for 12 years in the 1920s and 1930s, and was a selectman for 19 years in the 1950s and 1960s.

His wife, the former Elizabeth B. Loring, whom he married March 26, 1924, died April 7, 1979.

Besides his son and daughter, both of Tyringham, he leaves two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
